Related to Ubuntu and Upstart: I don't know the whole story there, and I guess we couldn’t see it at the time, but in retrospect it's clear that 'upstart vs systemd' was a low level proxy battle in an ideological fight about who Linux is for, basically 'linux is for humans' vs 'linux is for landlords'. The computer-renters won and Ubuntu… kinda gave up. Now the word 'human' doesn't even appear on the Ubuntu homepage. Ubuntu, Formerly For Humans.
