We can never know how that data is really processed by the servers, before being anonymized. Since Google is a closed-source and proprietary entity, there’s no way to find out either.

@plausiblePlausible Analytics Is it really a gray area though? The behaviour of is clearly in violation of the law and was already sanctioned several times by the CNIL, which also clarified the problem could only be cured by having a proxy which prevents from seeing the user's IP address at all.

In 2019, the CNIL initiated an action plan by publishing guidelines and a recommendation on the use of cookies, with the aim of promoting compliance by professionals on this matter, while ensuring that internet users are properly informed. Since 2020, several sanctions have been imposed on organizations that failed to comply with the law on advertising cookies (Article 82 of the French Data Protection Act).
