What is Chat Control?

It’s a recurring EU proposal that would force devices and apps like Signal, WhatsApp, or iMessage to scan every photo, video, and message before encryption, supposedly to detect illegal content.

In reality, it opens the door to mass surveillance of private communications.

This latest version was pushed by the Danish EU presidency, and withdrawn only after intense public and civil society pressure.

It’ll likely come back again under a new name.

Encryption protects journalists, activists, and ordinary people.
Breaking it doesn’t make anyone safer.
