Spotify's recommendations are sometimes weird. I sometimes get music from artists who solely share the same name as artists I like and listen to, but are otherwise musically unrelated.

You would think it would not happen, if each artist has its own ID.

I think it happens because of their combination of collaborative filtering and nearest neighbors, where the artist name factors into the vector distance. (I'm just pretending that I know what I'm talking about.)
