Not really. It was the simplest target for a proof of concept, and lots of people already understand it as a medium. I imagine the Matrix folks picked text chat for similar reasons.

Was thinking more of streaming protocols. Messaging sits somewhere in between I suppose.

The interesting dimension here is how much semantic metadata content is needed / exchanged. With activitypub I think people will eventually come to realise that this is one of its killer features ๐Ÿค“. It enables slow, meaningful exchanges full of extra info, context, provenance, further links etc. As the data volume of the channel goes up (audio, video) this becomes less important
