Matrix targeted text chat as a PoC, but it's designed as a more general federation protocol. These been a few experiments with other use cases, like blog comments (cactus.chat/), and encrypting conference calls (conference.bigbluebutton.org/n). Native voice/video streams, including conference calls, are part of the roadmap for Matrix 2.0;

I dont know how quickly it will become widespread reality but with permanent fiber connectivity it feels that entirely new use cases for 'real time' will be realistic. Important that this new digital window is built on a commons / open source ethics rather than being monopolized by some bigtech or other (like it happened so many times in the past)

There is a tipping point coming when the open source universe starts inventing the future rather than emulating the past
