Sysadmin life hack: check /root/.mysql_history for the initial root password update before going through the whole "start server with --skip-grant-tables --skip-networking" song and dance.

Security advice: clear your various ~/.*history files every now and again. Especially after you do something sensitive. (Inb4 OpenBSD users are all "or just don't use shells that store history")
