Happy 34th birthday to the Linux kernel!

On this day, August 25th, we celebrate 34 years since Linus Torvalds announced his new toy project. What started as a small, personal project has grown into the powerful Linux kernel, the heart of countless devices worldwide.

Its success is a good reminder of the power of opensource collaboration and the global community of developers who have contributed to its growth. Thank you, Linus, and thank you to everyone who has made Linux what it is today!

A screenshot of an email from Linus Torvalds, dated August 25, 1991, with the subject line "What would you like to see most in minix?". The body of the email describes the start of his project, a "free operating system," and asks for feedback. He mentions that the OS will not be "big and professional like gnu" and that it's "just a hobby."

Historical, indeed.
...and thanks Stallman for :

Without GNU there'd be nothing open for Linus to start with or contribute to in the first place.

Imagine where we'd be at without those decisions back then?

Forced to either choose Windows or ... ? oh. Without /GNU and , Apple would not exist anymore - and there'd be no Google too.

Wow. Thanks everyone doing GPL to provide choice and hope for all of us!
