Okay it eventually unfroze but by the time it did enough time had passed to accumulate so many debug messages the ones I wanted had scrolled out. It turns out VSCode's debug console (1) has a limited backscroll (2) by default it's a short limit (3) changing the limit is somehow less user-friendly than in the old black CMD.COM "DOS window". I KNEW I was making a mistake not simply running this shit on the command line
