It has been a little over a year since my mother passed away. She had 15 seconds of fame some years ago when I wrote about her breaking into IT in the 1960s. Today, I celebrate the memory of her being woke before that was a word.
When she discovered that my sister and I were learning history in school that didn't have any people of colour in it, she started her own school to teach children Africa, slavery, the Underground Railroad and everything else beige, brown, or black.
Rest in power, mom.
