It looked like this red-bellied woodpecker was about to spread its wings and fly giving me a face-on photo, but the more energy efficient hop was chosen.

I still got a decent capture.

1/4 A red-bellied woodpecker is among fig branches scoping out the area.

2/4 It sees something interesting and appears to be ready to swoop down.

3/4 But instead, it leaps to the next branch without opening its wings.

4/4 Once there, it makes another ground check but in the end saw nothing of interest.
