What happened to the term "nervous breakdown"? And why did so many women take Valium ("mother's little helper')?

Historically it seems we've better accepted when people reached a limit and needed some rest or convalescence, maybe some medical help - even if it was so sexist and these women needed better support than a valium pill.

I remember seeing valium in the medicine cabinet, and my mum confessing she would have ended it all were it not for me, her mother also had a nervous breakdown.
