I was this week years old (nearly 50) the first time I stayed in a hostel ( istreethostel.com ) and nearly everyone I mentioned this to made a face that said "It was nice knowing you with two kidneys", but four nights later... It was super pleasant, I met nice people from all over, the staff were helpful and friendly AF, and I'll stay here again when I have to come back to DC in a few months.
