She's done! Looks way better in print, but I've got the digital flipbook version linked in my blog. If you read it, I'd love it if you left a comment afterward.

Photo of my hand holding a copy of a zine. It is half-letter size and the cover is in color. The background is a colorful abstract expressionist painting by Sarasota artist Syd Solomon, using different tones of blue, yellow, pink, green and red. The title "Paradise Lost" is at the top in black sharpie, outlined. The words "Sarasota, Florida, hardcore & punk scene, 1980s-1990s" is in white handwriting on top of black & white digitally cut & pasted palm trees. A black and white cut-out photo of the Sarasota-Bradenton band BP is below. Above their heads are the handwritten words "As told through interviews."

For , I spoke with five individuals who grew up in SW and were around to witness the formation of Sarasota’s hardcore scene in the mid-1980s. Within these interviews is some nostalgia tempered with the harsh reality of racism, violence, dysfunctional family dynamics and so on. Memory is always incomplete, and the interviewees push up against that limitation continuously as they try to recall the events of 40 years ago. This quote seemed relevant.

A black and white page from the zine “Paradise Lost” with a halftone photo of a demolished building in the background. The following quote is overlaid on the image, written in my handwriting on white paper that was cut into strips, outlined in black, arranged from the top of the page to the bottom.

The quote reads, “It’s easy to make your life into stories, but it’s harder to sustain real memories. The difference between a story and a memory—the real experience has a smell and is dirty and is not wrapped up in simple endings.”
