무슨 이유로든 표를 주기로 결정했다면 그는 내게 최선의 후보인 것이다. 차선도 차악도 아닌 제한된 선택지 중의 최선은 반드시 존재한다. 당연하지만 최선의 후보라도 여전히 쓰레기일 수 있다. 더 극심한 쓰레기나 내가 더 용납하기 어려운 유형의 쓰레기가 아니었을 뿐이다. 그리고 그에게 한 표를 행사했다는 사실이 그를 미화하거나 선해할 이유를 조금도 주지 못한다.
