We may need to also get used to a "best practice" of starting to emit errors after deprecation, but with an env var flag to downgrade back to warnings.

We know our tools and libraries aren't being run with `-Werror` downstream, so it's time to get creative.

Also, in addition to the basic "haha, oh no..." reaction, reading that issue is a genuine treat because of how well Anderson is handling it for setuptools!

Especially given that it's setuptools, of all projects: probably the most unfairly derided project in the whole packaging space. The patience and compassion on display are virtues worth emulating.
