I think I want to sell my fully kitted out 16” M3 Max MacBook Pro from 2023 — a machine which still feels shiny any brand new to me — and replace it with an M4 MacBook Air.

I rarely need to work anywhere outside my home, but even carrying this machine a couple of blocks to a coffee shop seems like a real effort that's just not worthwhile. It's just so bulky & heavy! Carrying it in a tote bag is physically uncomfortable.

The specs page lists my existing machine as weighing 4.7lb. The 14” Pro is 3.6lb, the 15" Air is 3.3lb, and the 13" Air is 2.7lb, 42% lighter! In practice, packing a charger or putting a case on it will add some bulk & weight, but…

Will I regret downgrading from 128GB to 32GB of RAM? Is this an erroneous errand because even a 2.7lb computer will feel heavy when it's in a tote bag? Is there a secret third choice I should be considering?
