If you’re headed home for the holidays, and you’re reading this on Mastodon, I am pretty confident you’re your family’s tech support. Here’s my very short advice, if you want some:

1) If they have broadband, check the router’s firmware and make sure it’s up to date and uPNP isn’t enabled. Use GreyNoise’s IP check when you’re done. check.labs.greynoise.io

2) Read up on hacklore.org and dispel some of the mythology around cybersecurity they probably believe.

If you have a fediverse account, you can quote this note from your own instance. Search https://infosec.exchange/users/todb/statuses/115614078463147772 on your instance and quote it. (Note that quoting is not supported in Mastodon.)

there's a non-zero chance that if you're here, then you're probably your family's go-to guy. or gal. for just about anything with a computer in it or related to it.

@todbTod Beardsley 🤘 has a nice toot about some stuff you want to check when you forced into the tech support role over here:

to add to that, for security awareness month, I wrote up some things about IoT security. You know. Those internet enabled things in your home including your routers, printers, network attached devices and everything else in between.
