"conventions > codification" is a thing that fell out of me thinking about what exactly it is i hate about markdown, and i guess the followup to that is perhaps "standardization" is itself a red herring because it assumes the lie we can all agree when we cannot. standard protocols are essentially the "french academy" approach to linguistics, whereas real language evolves much more chaotically.
