All mysteries resolved! It was an extremely embarrassing oversight: my code did not initalize the GPIO pins for CS, DC and RES. Along the way I also borrowed the init sequence from U8g2.

This board is now also fully functional! The creative phase can begin - it's coding all the way now.

Here it is running the 2D water simulation from earlier. After some more fighting with PlatformIO, I got the FPU working too. It's sweet and fast!
