Takaichi Sanae, Japan's first female Prime Minister, appeared to throw cold water on the idea of an Empress of Japan. Takaichi said the Imperial Household Law "as it stands" doesn't allow it. Which is true - but the Diet can change the law!
Yahoo! News JP commenters noted this & pointed out a majority of the Japanese public would welcome Princess Aiko as Empress. Takaichi, however, appears to be digging in her heels and siding with her right-wing supporters.
