Jan told us that prior to those years, Prague was about equally divided between Czechs, Jews, and Germans, three ancient cultures that had lived side by side in that area for millennia.

Then that all ended catastrophically, with the mass murder of the Jewish population by the Nazis, followed by the Czechs' expulsion of the Germans (for their collaboration with the Nazis) after the war.

Jan said the longterm effect was to decimate the cultural richness of a city long known for its diversity, rich crosscultural interchanges, diversity, and tolerance.

I think of this and think of all the people in the US right now who imagine that by pushing the kind of people who own and operate this Mexican restaurant away, sending them packing, we'll build a better, healthier, more humane society.
