i got a job from cold-applying once (it was a summer job in between first year of uni and ... repeat of first year of uni because i failed diffequations). got it on the first try, they were very happy with me too even though i thought the code i wrote was awful (i didn't know how to write javascript yet) and i spent half of my time playing minecraft in the office
