One of the things we need to be really clear on: the GOP and Trump are mining our history in order to build an updated Jim Crow. Our past history is going to be very instructive on this point. I wrote about that here for Dame.

Vaclav Havel made a point in Power of the Powerless that dictatorships need to be understood in terms of their own historicity: they came from somewhere. Our budding dictatorship of course resembles the state-level dictatorships that were sprinkled around this country.

The difference is that now, they're also trying to seed it from the top. It creates many more challenges, but we also have certain assets in how we can resist it -- if we don't let politicians lose their nerve and decide that accommodation is the way to go.
