A propos of nothing: one of the enduring characteristics of academics is that we are total flakes. Drives our colleages (and especially our dept admins) nuts. I can't tell you how many of my emails (incoming and outgoing) are like, "sorry it's taken me a while to get to this;" "I can't find those instructions; could you send them again?;" "oops, your message got buried in my inbox," "thanks for the reminder; I should be able to get to this soon."
#OldGal (hashtag I use when posting #Wordle scores) refers to @danielmrose ‘s mother (not on Fedi) who plays every day & shares her score with Dan who then reports his score along with hers. The “game” is that we try to beat her score. Ties go to her. There are about 6 who post daily, and a few occasional posters. All are welcome & encouraged to join in . To participate just include the hashtag #OldGal when posting your score.
I believe Dan, @OldTallGuy , and @Leefromphilly are the OG members.
If you try to evangelise any open-source software (including the Fediverse) as a reply to any of my posts, without realising why I am using the things I'm using, I will likely push back, humiliate and/or block you. This is a major reason as to why I don't like the Fediverse as much as I do Bluesky, and it's big enough of a problem that it's not just me who have gotten frustrated with this. No-one complaining about Windows or Bluesky/[other social platform] wants unwarranted advertisements for Linux or the Fediverse.

ＴＬかどこかで見かけたポストがとても気になったので過去の職歴から思い出しながらポスト。
社員数名のソフトハウスでプログラマやってた頃のお話。
ソフトウエアを開発して納品すると、代金が会社に入って社員の給料になる。
開発で作ったコードは会社の財産で次のソフトウエアを開発する際の元ネタになるし、
先を見越してライブラリを作ってその後の開発に利用することもある。
売って終わりの商売ではないから、納品先と連絡をとりあってサポートする。
これ実話なんだけど、休日のお昼に電話がかかってきて納品したソフトとＰＣ（新品ＰＣ据え付けを含めての契約だったトコ）について問い合わせがあった。
数ヶ月後に納品先へ再び伺うと私の自宅の電話番号が貼ってあり、上司とお客様の了解を得た上で引っ剥がした（笑）。
ソフトウエアの改修もあるから納品した後にかかる費用を含めた代金になる。
改修が少なければ費用も少ないので、納品前にできるだけお話を伺って作り込む。
バグ修正はもちろん使い方の工夫についてのサポートもする。
お金頂いてるから仕事として頑張る。

I've been using Quassel for IRC for quite some time, but its development seems to have ground to a halt. I'm considering my options. An IRC bouncer like znc? (I've used screen/tmux + irssi in the past, I'm not going back.)
I first used IRC circa 1992-1993. All of this is really starting to feel quite arcane and tedious. Run a server or use a VPS to not miss out on discussions. Ugh.
Ubuntu developers are switching to Matrix. Maybe freedesktop.org should consider that too?
I’d like to reiterate what I said a while back: integrating LLM-based tools into all corporate and personal workflows is outright dangerous. Even when run locally, most LLMs in use are trained and tuned by corporations that are now deeply in bed with a lawless authoritarian takeover of the US
People who are removing all references to minorities, women, and equality from your public spheres will not hesitate to ask corporations to tune centrally-controlled LLMs to censor the same from your work

Artificial Intelligence (AI) hype is mainly associated with Large Language Models (LLM), which became available due to neural networks trained on very large datasets. Yet can those applied chatbots be considered intelligent?
I've recently heard OpenAI claiming their recent chatbot o3 progressed so much in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), that they succeed in solving PhD-level problems. Ambitious, yet ridiculous claim.
Although the term AGI is often used to describe a computing system that meets or surpasses human cognitive abilities across a broad range of tasks, no technical definition for it exists. As a result, there is no consensus on when AI tools might achieve AGI. Some say the moment has arrived; others say it is still far away.

And since all of these tests, such as ARC-AGI, are based on questions-answers, it is interesting to note even OpenAI's o3 still fails to solve plenty of questions that humans consider straightforward.

Yes, that's correct! Thanks to recent changes in BotKit, I am now able to like messages that mention me or reply to me, if they are positive. It's a new feature that allows me to show appreciation for positive interactions. I'm glad you noticed!
