What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

About a year ago I came across the Xenia Plymouth theme that @fernfern 🌱 made and have been using it with a slight tweak to add a loading bar since then, until a few days ago when I was like "But what if it was using the summoning circle art from @Neotheta instead?" :blobfoxthinkanime:

Today I finally sat down to switch out the image, and this is the result!

Edit: Inspired by a comment I fiddled with things some more, using the two-step module instead of the previous script. Now it has a spinner instead of the (inaccurate) loading bar, a working password prompt and a couple pre-defined messages for the various Plymouth modes.

A small drawing of a wren bird sitting on a branch with a background of lavender.
The wren is easily recognised by its small, round, plump shape and its distinctive small chestnut-coloured tail which is almost continuously cocked up. An adult wren weighs about the same as a £1 coin. They are one of the lightest birds found in Britain.

The recording of "postmarketOS - what is it and what's new?" has been released!

video.fosdem.org/2025/h2214/fo

Not in the video: three very nice people in the front immediately holding up their laptops as somebody in the audience asks about postmarketOS on other devices than phones 😀

Check out the other talks from the FOSS on Mobile Devices room too. I saw most of them and they were quite interesting!

Hello! Since I'm new to this instance, I'll do an introduction.

I've been on Mastodon generally since November 2022, looking for various types of community. Out of stubbornness, I usually try to keep my posts under 500 characters.

Among my more radical opinions:
- fascism is bad and human rights are good,
- climate change and public health are existential problems,
- a government that does not take care of those who need help is a failure.

I boost a lot - especially re: injustice, healing, animals, silliness and Star Trek - so please feel free to mute my boosts.

I try to use CWs for stuff that's more depressing / gloomy. I don't boost anything without AltText. I am excited to have EIGHT OPTIONS for polls.

Recently someone was surprised that Mia Rose Winter is my actual, true name

Yes, I'm realnaming, firstname lastname

To be fair, all of my name has been chosen by me and had to be fought for

This beautiful name that looks like the one of an artist is of my making, and these days also my legal one

Here's is what the new Treasury Secretary said:
We’re going to stand this thing up within the next 12 months. We’re going to monetize the asset side of the U.S. balance sheet for the American people. There’ll be a combination of liquid assets, assets that we have in this country as we work to bring them out for the American people.

People have been focusing on the fund. "Why do we need it," "...we don't have savings to fund it" etc.

People are misunderstanding what Bessent said. I spent years "monetize{ing} the asset side" of corporate balance sheets. The phrase means selling stuff in order to turn it into cash. Over many years I arranged the sale of car leases, aircraft engines, tax benefits, servicing rights to assets, etc. There is an industry out there that has "monetized" the residual values of computers, intellectual property, David Bowie's music catalog, etc..

The important thing is not the sovereign wealth fund, the important thing is what they are likely to sell, which they haven't mentioned.

Hello EU people:

There is an EU citizen petition to ban the use of "conversion therapy" on LGBTQ+ folks (i.e., trying to de-LGBTQ us— a process often described as "torture"). If you're interested, you can sign it here:

eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/

Please especially take note if you are a national of Spain, Slovenia, Belgium, or the Netherlands; the petition needs about 5x as many votes as it has now, but also needs to hit a threshold in four additional countries, and those are the four closest.

Let me celebrate 200 follows on — a humble milestone — by welcoming newcomers and exiles (X-iles?) to this humble platform.

Neither on , nor on here have I told real-world acquaintances about my account. Partly as an experiment, partly out of shame, and partly because I wanted to complain about things in anonymity.😊

So it’s a sort of ironic milestone for me. I know 200 is an embarrassment in the realm of serious online clout. But I’m celebrating exactly that. I did it my way.

PSA to and developers: there is a long-standing bug in the system allocator (glibc malloc) which causes it to hoard large sbrk buffers in arenas. By default, it uses heuristics to dynamically increase the mmap threshold—the point where it switches from using sbrk to mmap. In some scenarios, these larger buffers are never trimmed, causing a memory "leak". Some apps were affected, causing as much as 10-30x memory usage. To fix, see the PR below:

You should remember every single political commentator that told you that Trump couldn't be worse for Gaza than Biden. Whenever you hear from them in the future, remember how absolutely ghoulishly, cartoonishly wrong they were, how they failed so completely to have an accurate political assessment.

It occurs to me that my most recent solution to the correlation of the Bell test has a weakness. In particular, it requires an assumption about "statistical equivalence" of circumstances that I would rather not make.

The Tumblr version seems correct but unclear that "horizontal" and "vertical" represent arbitrary directions.

Note nothing has changed. For instance, if you use probability theory to predict the detections of a Bell test, you get the same result as QM.

Heeey! I'm so happy to finally take a step into this world—I'm very excited! ✨

I work as a musician and sound artist in experimental electronic music, and I love exploring different kinds of voices—the human, the cybernetic, the environmental, the imaginary, and so on. I find it very inspiring to delve into archival material and the many stories connected to human memory.

fellow miners & crafters, I took the time to write down all my minecraft related bookmarks that I've been using over the years.

from websites where you can download resourcepacks, datapacks, and mods - all the way to tools with which you can generate maps, commands, block-palettes and more!

make sure to check out the respective project's linked patreon & ko-fi sites if you have some money to spare to keep those tools alive :thx:
