What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Well, I think I just found out _why_ Lycamobile are so cheap - it's lack of investment in customer service :(

They're taking a monthly renewal despite having told me they wouldn't. Except, I can't log in to do anything about it because they send a message to the number and I've deleted the e-sim (and can't readd it).

Le Sigh...

I've just moved instance from IOCX (ioc.exchange) over to swecyb. Now, I've been extremely happy over at IOCX and the reason for doing this had nothing to do with the awesome admin @seb or anything about the instance itself.

It had all to do with it being hosted in the US and I believe us Europeans right now need to move as much as possible of our Internet presence and tools out of the US into Europe.

Why Swecyb?

Because of admin @nopatience of course! :D

In the past week we've mostly been fixing small little interface details and adding tests for payout flows.

We've also made some exciting progress on ActivityPub integration, but we're not yet at a place where we can share anything. Watch this space.

Ok, I'm on the challenge.

#ChangeOS
For my personal laptop I moved from Windows10 to #Kubuntu (Ubuntu with @kde). This is a stop to boycott Windows11.

#ChangeMobileOS
After getting root on my Android device I installed @LineageOS.
Instead of Linux there is limited support for LineageOS. I recommend to buy a supported device: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

#ChangeBrowser
On desktop I replaced Chrome with @librewolf. As fallback I run #Firefox and a degoogled #Chromium. As librewolf is not available on Android I use @Waterfox here. Both support my Firefox profile I have since 2004.

On LineageOS and Android the new default Appstore is @fdroidorgF-Droid, for proprietary apps #AuroraStore (fdroid).

Hackers' Pub Introduces Flexible Username Changes: Breaking the Fediverse Norm

洪 民憙 (Hong Minhee) @hongminhee@hackers.pub

Hackers' Pub, an ActivityPub-enabled social network, introduces a unique feature allowing users a one-time username change, a departure from the typical fediverse practice of permanent usernames. This policy acknowledges the evolving nature of personal identity, offering flexibility while maintaining network stability. When a username is changed, it becomes available for others, creating opportunities for new users to acquire desirable names. To prevent broken links, permalinks containing the original username will function until the username is claimed by someone else. This is made possible by using UUID-based actor URIs that don't include the username, unlike platforms like Mastodon where the username is embedded in the URI. Inspired by GitHub's username policy, Hackers' Pub aims to balance identity evolution with the benefits of federation. This approach allows users to correct initial username choices, evolve their online identity, and maintain their content history and social connections. This policy represents an experiment in fediverse identity management, testing whether flexibility can coexist with the stability required for federation, potentially influencing other platforms to adopt similar approaches.
