A Canadian friend's perspective on US behavior since the Trump regime was installed:

One thing I've learned over the past few weeks, and it's been a bit of a sobering lesson, is that a lot of Americans I know don't actually know what's going on between the US and Canada right now, and just how seriously Canadians are taking this. So, against my better judgement, here's a timeline to explain why we're here, and why we're angry.

Nov 30th, 2018 - The United States, Canada and Mexico finalize a trade agreement. Trump personally negotiates the terms and signs the document, celebrating it as 'the greatest trade agreement in history". (This is important.)

Nov 29th, 2024 - In a face to face meeting, Trump threatens the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, that he will be imposing 25% tariffs and that if Canada wants to avoid that, it should join the US as a state.

Nov 30th, 2024 - Trump publicly calls our Prime Minister 'Governor Trudeau' and instructs his staff to only address him as Governor going forward. He again suggests Canada should join the USA.
Dec 3rd, 2024 - Trump remarks that he would split Canada into two states once annexed.

can 2025 be the year we stop using the term ponzi scheme. frauds of the style named after charles ponzi were pioneered by Adele Spitzeder in Germany and Sarah Howe in the US. I'm more than a little sick of women's excellence in crime being overlooked. I will be calling it a spitzeder-howe scheme from now on, take my account away if i don't.

Spitzeder was lesbian btw, shame on people not taking pride in our criminals

🐈 so everyone knows cross country canada, iconic computer lab game etc. but did anyone go to a school where the kids actually knew how the fuck to play it and successfully make deliveries or whatever, i feel like none of the kids at my school including me could conceptualize what it was asking us to do so we just drove around randomly

I've been thinking about the "terminal driver" and I realized I'm kind of confused it. my understanding is that the terminal driver is responsible for (among others):

1. basic line editing (when the tty is in cooked mode)
2. translating bytes (like `\x03` for Ctrl+C) into signals (like SIGINT)

but in the 1980s when the "terminal" and the "mainframe" were separate machines, #1 would presumably happen on the terminal, and #2 on the mainframe

but now they're both handled in the same place?

Five years ago, I was a writer for Lockstin. I wrote five videos, by some considered to be the early benchmark of Splatoon lore YouTube when no-one else was making serious content in that space.

Those videos made thousands for his channel. I made $378. Total.

Years later, I'm finally ready to tell my story.

Little known fact: @evanEvan Prodromou and I worked at a startup in 2020 that never launched. It wasn't a great experience for me, but I loved the team we had hired, including Evan. I didn't know much then about or the social web.

I went back to @Flipboard in 2021 and in 2023 I started to learn about because of @mikeMike McCue's vision. Fast forward to 2025, Flipboard + @surf are organizing 's first . Evan was one of the first people to sign on, which created a snowball from there, which helped the event be a success.

This week, we got to meet IRL for the first time! So when I think about "the purpose" of that hard 10 months at that startup, I now know what it was.

Things I learned about , a thread:

I've never had or seen measles, I was born in the US after the measles vaccine but before antivaxxers went big, so I did some reading. In order of excitingness:

1) Measles is airborne, making this a great time to . IKR? looks like it would be a skin contact thing, but it's primarily airborne so it can linger in the air for hours after an infectious person exhales in a room. Familiar, no?

"Python packaging is terrible and no one wants anyone to fix it."

Friends, python packaging was *better* than its reputation when I was a neophyte and it's been getting worked on more or less constantly the entire time I've been in the game.

I'm not even a huge fan of uv but @hynekHynek Schlawack broke down modern packaging in 25 minutes:

And I've said it before, I'll say it again: The standards work that is reducing the packaging side differences between the tools to make them all interop is actively changing the game.
