This morning I gave an answer to a MathOverflow question using traditional pen-and-paper analysis: https://mathoverflow.net/a/489533/766 . The answer was not in closed form, so I wanted to simulate it approximately. At this point I asked o3-mini-high for some code for this. Interestingly, it first declared that the quantity I was trying to compute was infinite (it wasn't), but nevertheless provided numerical code which did give a rough approximation to the quantity I wanted (to one decimal place): https://chatgpt.com/share/67d71204-3510-800e-8bca-11bfbf53fc3d . At that point I figured out that one should use the theory of Markov chains to get a more precise answer and asked o3-mini-high first for a theoretical formula, and then code to compute the result. Interestingly, it was able to correct a basic error in the prompt (I had written max instead of min when writing a truncation), and gave me perfectly good code, which I was able to adapt to then give a more numerically precise answer to the MO question.
So all in all a pretty good assist from o3; it made a mistake that I corrected, but I also made a mistake that it corrected, and code that would have taken perhaps an hour of my time on my own was generated, tested, modified, and reported in maybe ten minutes.

It's entirely open source, though you only get two tools: CLI MD -> HTML and VS Code extension. The CLI is pretty good at taking Markdown and turning in into an HTML slide deck. I much prefer iA Presenter though, which is not open source, but also not horribly expensive.

![저는 지난 3월 8일까지 매주 토요일이 오기만을 기다렸습니다. 페미니스트가 활개를 치고 다닐 수 있는 평등한 광장이 정말 좋았거든요. 누구든 무지개 아이템을 두르고 다니고 자신의 정체성을 마음껏 밝힐 수 있는 광장에서 고래가 참았던 숨을 트듯 숨겨왔던 저 자신을 드러낼 수 있었습니다. 이런 광장을 만들어준 분들, 평등한 문화를 퍼뜨려주는 분들에게 감사하고 저도 이 광장을 유지하는 데 기여하고 싶어서 시민 자원봉사단에 참여하게 되었습니다.
그런데 윤석열이 석방되고 그동안 광장에 나오지 않던, 평등수칙을 잘 모르는 사람들이 광장에 나오면서 많은 문제가 발생했습니다. 성소수자 혐오 발언을 하고 여성이거나 여성으로 패싱되는 사람들을 성희롱하고 기수들을 공격하고 행진하면서 욕하고 어려 보이는 사람을 함부로 대하고 소수자의 발언을 막고 집회 현장에서 난동을 부리는 등 평등수칙을 위반하는 행위들을 직접 보거나 전해 들으면서 참 많이 속상했습니다. 진보하는 건 더디고 힘겨운데 퇴보하는 건 왜 이렇게 순식간일까요? 너무 화가 나서 하소연했더니 플랫폼C의 민희님이 12월 7일 페미당당의 심미섭님 발언에 대한 야유와 한강진 키세스 집회 첫날 트랜스젠더에 대한 혐오에 잘 대응해서 분위기를 바꿀 수 있었던 것처럼 이번에도 잘 이겨내 보자고 하시더라고요. 그렇죠. 뭐 하나 갑자기 쉽게 얻어낸 것은 없었습니다. 퇴진집회 스크린에 평등한 집회를 위한 약속문을 올린 것도 [윤석열즉각퇴진 사회대개혁 비상행동] 명칭에서 국민을 뺀 것도 광장에 무지개 깃발이 넘쳐나는 것도 하물며 집회 현장에 쓰레기 분리 수거함을 마련한 것도 누군가가 포기하지 않고 싸운 덕분입니다.
저는 이번 일을 더 많은 사람들에게 평등수칙을 전파할 수 있는 기회라고 생각하려고 합니다. 침묵하거나 회피하지 않고 당당하게 평등수칙을 준수할 것을 요청할 것입니다. 윤석열로 대표되는 혐오가 만연한 사회로 돌아가지 않을 거라고 외칠 겁니다. 우리는 다시 평등한 광장을 만들 수 있습니다. 다 같이 힘냅시다!

When I was on the Windows accessibility team at Microsoft, I don't recall us spending any time trying to make UI Automation easier for third-party developers to implement correctly. I didn't begin to become aware of the pitfalls myself until two years into my time there, when I was fortuitously introduced to a third-party developer who wanted our help with their UIA implementation during the company Hackathon that year.
It's really tempting to retreat from this reality and dream of a future where AI magically solves everything, by enabling a screen reader in the literal sense, i.e. something that interprets the pixels on the screen. I've done this multiple times over the past couple of years, often with the help of an LLM, that is, writing escapist sci-fi stories where this happens one way or another. I'm trying to stop doing that, because I recognize the problems with both generative AI and escapism.

I don't know if there's a way out on US public opinion by that point. Ideally the foray is enough to take and hold some territory, so that American military might is focused on that point, not invasion.
As for allies, I agree that it's a major question. Canada would probably need to clear with NATO that preemptive strikes count as self-defence.
