‘I woke up on Saturday morning to a flood of texts and emails. Overnight, the White
House had issued a memorandum directing the Attorney General to seek sanctions
against lawyers challenging the administration in court.
The memo begins: "Lawyers and law firms that engage in actions that violate the laws
of the United States or rules governing attorney conduct must be efficiently and
effectively held accountable." And it only gets worse from there.
As has often been the case recently, the memo goes out of its way to attack me by
name. In fact, the entire second paragraph is a long-winded screed against me,
accusing me — among other things — of "grossly unethical misconduct." I wear
Donald Trump's scorn like a badge of honor.
The accompanying fact sheet states that the memo aims to "hold attorneys and law
firms accountable for unethical conduct when litigating against the federal
government or pursuing baseless partisan attacks." Unsurprisingly, it specifically calls
out litigation that "threatens [...] election integrity."
