Been juggling hardware, moving VMs and jails around, and I shoehorned myself into a bit of an odd situation.

I had two Intel NUCs, one is a weaker Celeron CPU, with a meager 4 GB ram. The other is a beast with a much better CPU and 32 GB of ram.

The one with the 32 GB and strong CPU has the easy job, and the weak one has the hard job.

The easiest solution was to swap their drives, and network cables.

The only software change I had to make?

sed -i bak s/re0/em0/g /etc/rc.conf

on the first one

and, shocker.....

sed -i bak s/em0/re0/g /etc/rc.conf

That was _it_. Both systems came up clean because the network subsystem isn't a clusterfuck.

That doesn't work in Linux.

I'd like to get into voice transcription for note-taking, alongside my recent resurgence of taking written pen-and-paper notes and sketches.

Is there already some decent Linux-friendly thing to manage inbound WAV/MP3/OPUS recordings from a recording device and do transcription over it, or is this something I'll want/need to duct tape some janky nonsense together myself for?

Strict requirement that this be able to run fully offline on machines I control. No cloud services, no subscriptions, etc. I don't mind if it's paid software if it works well. If it uses ML models, it needs to be able to demonstrate the model was trained ethically on data it had permission to access.

(Bonus RFC: anyone have thoughts on the Sony ICD-TX660 as a recording gadget? The form factor being effectively the same size as a vape pen seems absolutely perfect, and it's a nice fully-offline task-built gadget that looks to be built well?)

I was excited to go to the @fediforum on Tuesday.

But today I learned that one of the organizers, Kaliya "Identity Woman" Young, is a big ol' transphobe.

For a community like the Fediverse to succeed, it needs to be welcoming. It cannot have as a leader someone who poses a danger to a vulnerable constituency.

About a year ago, my parents made the switch to Linux on their home machines because they really hated Win 10... Today I got a call from my mother to help her out with something, but I did not expect that "something" will be figuring out a sed pattern for a shell script she wrote to bulk rename files.

When I asked her why she didn't use some GUI program she said "I was an accountant in the DOS era, this makes more sense to me than a ribbon menu in Excel".

Chromium now has initial, experimental support for the xdg-session-management protocol, which will start shipping in canary channel in the coming days. I've implemented and tested it against Mutter 48, the only compositor supporting it atm - also experimentally - since version 47.

The most upsetting part of this response, to me, is that it seems like Rumeysa Ozturk had her visa revoked and was arrested not because of anything she personally did, but because of the movement she associated with.

That's dark. It sounds like the Administration is going to dish out collective punishment to the most vulnerable participants in the anti-war movement for the actions of some other people at the protests.

Secretary Rubio Defends Revoking Turkish Student's Visa

During a news conference in Guyana, Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended revoking the visa of Turkish student Rumeysa Ozturk for participating in pro-Palestinian protests at Tufts University and writing an op-ed. Ozturk, a doctoral student, was arrested by plain-clothes agents near her home in Somerville, Massachusetts and is being detained in Louisiana. Rubio warned there would be more arrests and deportations and encouraged other countries to do the same.

Rust keeps parsing those logs faster

A few years ago, I wrote about parsing logs 230x faster with Rust, and then followed up with some improvements. Then computers got a lot faster. Today, I re-ran all the same benchmarks that I’ve been running since 2018, and discovered that computers in 2025 are a silly amount faster than computers from 2021. Specifically, on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max processor (which has 12 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), I am now able to process 983k records/second on a single core, and 13.1M r/s on all cores. Using the original numbers from the “230x faster” blog post, this M4 Max is 3,113x faster than the original 8 Python workers in AWS Glue were.
