I'm about to go to bed before I set up for a event that celebrates the joy of technology and the responsibility we have to use the skills we have to improve the world.

A while ago, I caught the news that former release manager, @swearyanthonyAnthony B, is in the ICU in a critical condition with an unclear prognosis. I'm a Python person because I had the fortune to meet Anthony at the right time, and I'll be keeping him in my thoughts as this year's unfolds.

DATA:
sony playstation 2: name contains no queer terminology. best selling console of all time.
nintendo DS: contains one debatably queer term (dom/sub). second best selling.
nintendo switch: one debatably queer term. third best selling.
nintendo wii: one queer term (pronouns in bio). nintendo's third best selling console.
nintendo wii u: TWO queer terms. a complete flop.

OBSERVATION: consumers overwhelmingly support game consoles with moderately queer names. occasionally, consoles with no queer elements succeed. however, names that are too queer are rejected by most consumers, even if they launch with the best console version of Scribblenauts Unlimited (2011).

CONCLUSION: the switch 2 will not sell as well as the original console, as consumers will be overwhelmed by the idea of two individuals who change sex positions. xbox, whose console names have never included queer terms, will continue to see declining sales unless their naming scheme is changed. we suggest that their rumoured handheld console should be named the Xbox Metamour.

Nothing bad, but wondering about gender/sexuality... 🏳️‍🌈

When I was about 13/14, I realized that I was/am attracted to people, not their gender... I know, this may sound weird, but that's how my then undiagnosed AuDHD brain called it... How a person is, and of course how they look to me, is what makes me attracted to them. So I always thought I was bisexual... So I used that when I talked about me and my sexuality... :bi_heart:

But then, I learned more about myself. About the different sexual orientations...

And now, I'm wondering if I may be non-binary... I've been reading up about it a bit, trying to understand it better...

This is one of the things that I found online:
*The term “nonbinary” can mean different things to different people. Essentially, it’s used to describe someone whose gender identity can’t be described as exclusively woman or man.
Some people who are nonbinary experience their gender as both man and woman, and others experience their gender as neither man nor woman.
Nonbinary can also be used as an umbrella term, encompassing many gender identities that don’t fit into the man-woman binary.*

This came from the Healthline website. And well, I've never felt like a girly girl... I loved boys clothes, I loved boys toys, when I could I got very short hair... I am a woman with the bits and bops that go with it. But I've never felt like a proper one. I didn't do heels, dresses, or makeup. I don't really behave like a girl...

So that made me wonder if I could be non-binary instead? :nonbinary_heart:

I am wondering if my non-binary friends may be able to share a wee bit of why they identify as non-binary. Can it be "as simple" as not feeling like a girly girl when born as CIS woman? But also not feeling like I'm in the wrong body? 🤔

My autistic brain really struggles with this... I don't want to offend anyone, but I also want to know more about this, about me... If that makes sense...

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts! I really appreciate it! :blobcatlgbt:

Thanks @cfedev for hosting another great event today!

Make sure to watch for the Code & Coffee published sessions. (I still can't believe that was Micha Rodriguez's first ever conf talk?!)

Some great insights and demos, and as always, a warm, lively chat. CFE events have been a pleasure for years, and I'm always happy when I can manage to catch them!

on the oblivion remaster's dialogue camera

prefacing this to say i'm really enjoying the oblivion remaster so far - it's one of the best remasters i've ever played, up there with need for speed hot pursuit and the last of us part one. there's more than enough posts that go "this feature sucks, therefore the game is garbage" on the internet, and this is not one of those. the original oblivion will always exist for those who truly cannot enjoy the remaster for whatever reason.

with that out of the way: i wish they didn't remove the "world freezes, camera zooms" effect when you talk to people in the remaster. the game still kind of does that, but instead of the abrupt cut and zoom, it does this gentle pan, sometimes taking three seconds to bring the character into view. IMO, it feels ten percent less janky and a hundred percent worse.

this video shows it right at the start. the character is talking and animating, but they're almost completely off-screen, and the camera lazily swoops down to show them. it's weird.

it doesn't really fix the problems with the dialogue lock that made it so jarring in the first place, namely that you can suddenly find your inputs disabled and your camera swinging around to look at an NPC that snuck up behind you. if every conversation in oblivion happened because you looked at someone and pressed the "talk" button, the hard zoom from the original release wouldn't have been nearly as disorienting. it's the fact that you can find yourself in the dialogue state when you're not expecting it that's the issue.

i'm pretty sure the designers were aware of this back in 2006 - one of the first times you get dialogue sprung on you is when you enter jauffre's place in weynon priory for the first time. a monk stands up, walks towards you while in your view, and then talks to you. the designers made sure you had ample time to realise you're about to be talked to.

but oblivion dialogue minus the zoom plus a slow pan is still oblivion dialogue. having control wrested away and "STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM" shouted at you while you're quietly sneaking around and listening carefully for footsteps is always going to be jarring. why not keep the iconic hard cut and zoom?

Testing negative for covid after 3 days (Thank god for Paxlovid), but still symptomy. Thank you all for understanding my lack of writing - my team has been on top of things and picking up the slack with the news stories this week. Lots of things going on. Take care of yourselves this weekend.

Not surprising, but I did not wake up to find the Pull Requests I submitted last night to some miraculous re-run which fixed whatever issues the GitHub Continuous Integration checks were running into. ;-/

sigh

I think this means I need to get mpbb working locally (my past attempts failed) to see if I can recreate the issues and at least narrow down whether it's something related to GitHub Continuous Integration checks, or mpbb or what.

No idea how long that will take me. A while, probably. Especially since I have a lot of other things to do.

Another pressrelease-masquerading-as-journalism service from Kevin Roose here. Continuing the proud tradition of disinformation on behalf of the broligarchy. Here are a few questions he could have asked instead.

1. What cults are the Anthropic crew in, and what is the ideological ancestry of these cults? (We've done the work for him here, hint hint, its eugenics: firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/

Kevin Roose & @kevinroose
New column: Anthropic is studying "model welfare" to determine if Claude or other Al systems are (or will soon be) conscious and deserve moral status.
I talked to Kyle Fish, who leads the research, and thinks there's a ~15% chance that Claude or another Al is conscious today.
Should We Start Taking the Welfare of A.I. Seriously?
As artificial intelligence systems become smarter, one A.I. company is trying to figure out what to do if they become conscious.

The Linux mascot is a penguin named Tux because Linus Torvalds, the creator of the kernel, was bitten by a penguin. Seriously, he claims he didn't actually get sick, but it solidified his affection for them. This is the best origin story for a tech mascot ever. Happy World Penguin Day.
