'Two perspectives can both have a piece of the truth.

Internally: you can feel both angry and guilty at the same time. Realizing that you don’t have to pick – both can be true – brings relief.

Externally: you can see the kernel of truth in someone else’s perspective without giving up your own perspective. You can ask what’s distorted about your perspective without giving up what’s true about your perspective.'

@presleypizzo.bsky.socialPresley Pizzo

'Holding Accountable ≠ Shaming and Punishing

To stop wrongdoing long-term, people have to take a hard look at themselves and change the root cause of the wrongdoing, deep inside themselves.

Deep change requires feeling safe.

Feeling shame is the opposite of feeling safe.

Though consequences are sometimes needed to motivate certain people to begin the accountability process, compassion aids the accountability process.'

if i were ever to do something so base as have political views, I would simply keep them out of the eternal platonic realm of software development, which is my blessedly apolitical safe space 🤲

(definitely don't ask me where computers came from or what their history is or how they're manufactured or how they're used today or what foss was originally meant to be, or where the computer parts come from, or the political movements that profits from tech companies are going towards, la la la i can't hear you!!!)

NordVPN, Fedora 42, and iptables compatibility

I updated my Framework 13 to Fedora 42 about two weeks ago, just before the final release. It has been pretty solid! This evening, I went to start up my VPN (I use NordVPN, FWIW). No luck. Just no connection. The VPN connection has failed. Please check your internet connection and try connecting to the VPN again. If the issue persists, contact our customer support.

It is literally impossible to explain ADHD task avoidance to people who don't experience it, I think.

It has to sound absolutely insane to just sit around, filled with dread and anxiety, not doing a small thing you "could do any time" that really needs to get done. And to just continue that way for hours, days, weeks, months, even fucking years.

Like, who lives that way? How can anyone live that way? (I live that way, but I don't know how I survive)

(April 2025 edition)

Hi, I’m Kate. I’m a 41-year-old software developer based in the south-west of England. I’m best known for my National Grid: Live site at grid.iamkate.com.

I’m the Development Director at itseeze.com, where in 2007 I created a CMS that’s now used by thousands of sites across the UK and Ireland.

I’ve been in a relationship with @Clare since 2008, and we married in 2013. Same-sex marriage wasn’t legal yet, but we found a loophole: I’m trans.

BBSes are back, bbs.

IEEE Spectrum wrote about running an old-school bulletin-board system (BBS) from a Raspberry Pi 3 over LoRa, using the off-grid mesh-networking capabilities of Meshtastic, and it sounds like a very fun, nerdy project.

I didn’t have internet access early enough to get in on the BBS craze at its height. Perhaps this is my second chance?

Can Meshtastic Radios Revive the Charm of Old School Bullletin Board Systems?

It's in German about the night sleeper train from Berlin to Vienna. And it is spot on. I've taken this train 4 times so far. I can look past the late 90ies attire and the lack of space even in the private sleeping compartments.

But I want to stress that the insanity lies in the fact that no matter how early you book it always ends up costing at least 1000 EUR back and forth for three people.

This is the real insanity when compared to flying.

The best way to improve the fediverse is to fix basic things that don't work well, like reliable federation of replies to your post to all of your followers. Data portability and other things can wait. If the fediverse is so unreliable and broken it can't be used to coordinate fedi development, it won't succeed.

Not that you need me to tell you who to vote for, but there's a lot of positive stuff to vote for this election. The Liberals have a genuinely fantastic housing plan - the best of any of the parties this time around. They're also committing to protecting human rights domestically, which is key right now.

Here in Vancouver East, our NDP MP, Jenny Kwan, is super responsive and extremely good on immigration and human rights issues. Very happy to vote to reelect her. Check what your MP stands for.

One last thought. There are politicians who want to make discrimination against people like me a political norm here. I just want to live my life quietly. That’s all anyone like me wants. The people whipping up hate against people like me hope to use public hatred against various groups for their own goals, and I hope you can all show you won’t believe it and won’t reward them for it.

"Even if Wikipedia’s content was biased (it isn’t), even if every editor was actively trying to push an anti-Israel narrative (they aren’t), that would still be protected by the First Amendment. The government doesn’t get to threaten organizations over their editorial choices, no matter how much certain prosecutors or publications might dislike those choices."

How far can a toot travel in the fediverse?

I chatted recently with someone who complained that the fediverse lacked "reach".

So I'm curious: if you are up for it, could you please reply to this toot (which started life on single user instance on a tiny computer in a garage in the United Kingdom) saying which country you are in?

Edit: 12 hours, 74 countries: neilzone.co.uk/2025/04/a-toot-
