Just finished the first chapter of a story I've been trying to write for the past 8 months! It's only about 3,900 words, but there were about 20,000 words written, revised, and deleted behind the scenes 😵‍💫 archiveofourown.org/works/6512

It's a fanfiction of Fire Emblem: Fates, a fantasy action RPG for the 3DS. I played it as a preteen when it came out, and it's had a special place in my heart ever since.

The whole fanfic is titled "If Flames Unseal", a reference to Fates' original Japanese title (Fire Emblem: If) and the Seal of Flames, a legendary weapon which the game revolves around. This chapter is titled "Madam President" and it's mostly a dream the main character is having. It serves to show that my version of the main character is different from the canon version. Why did I change her, you may be wondering?

In canon, her character flaw is that she's too trusting, but that conflicts with her backstory. Three people are only alive because she intervened to save them, against the wishes of everyone around her. A fourth is (presumed) dead because she couldn't do that. So I think it makes more sense for her character flaw to be a tendency to try to gain control over her surroundings; After all, when she fails, people die. TL;DR My Corrin isn't out of character, the canon one is /LH

OK, so the stats / scientist brain in my head goes off at this paragraph.

• You'd need to interview 10,000 students, faculty, and staff for the quoted differences between Jewish and general populations to be an error bar apart (they interviewed 4300).
• Self-reporting of feared future consequences is not especially robust as an indicator of what is actually happening (to wit, Christians saying they're more likely than atheists to be physically harmed for their beliefs).

thecrimson.com/article/2025/4/

Meanwhile, 92 percent of Muslim and 61 percent of Jewish respondents, including faculty and staff as well as students, feared academic and professional repercussions for voicing their personal or political opinions — compared to 59 percent for all respondents.

Is this thing on?

Hello again Fediverse, and hello my fellow polymaths! For those, who don't know me: I'm Nikita, a 25-year-old web developer from Germany 🇩🇪

To be honest, I don't always consider myself a real polymath, for I spend most of my time coding: both at my job and at home. While I don't have other hobbies, I do enjoy other activities: cooking, watching YouTube, and cycling. And I can yap non-stop about linguistics, graphic design, and open-source projects!

I also have a blog which I don't update as often as I'd like to :(

Thrilled to have moved here and excited for what's to come!

"This latest move follows Martin’s established pattern of constitutional violations, including investigating protected speech by Congress members, attacking the Associated Press, and probing medical journals over their editorial policies.

But his attack on Wikipedia represents something even more dangerous: a federal prosecutor attempting to control how the internet’s largest collaborative knowledge platform manages its content.

The way this works is pretty straightforward: First, you find some pretext to investigate. Then you write a threatening letter. Then you leak that letter to a friendly media outlet. In this case, Martin sent his letter to The Free Press, a publication that has spent years warning about government censorship — at least when they pretend Democrats do it.
(...)
There’s more in there, including complaints about how AI tools train on Wikipedia, suggesting (ridiculously) that this might implicate Wikipedia if “foreign actors” are able to “launder information” into AI systems. And the letter threatens to revoke Wikpedia’s non-profit status (something the IRS would normally investigate, not the US Attorney for DC).

There are also demands to know details about Wikpedia’s editorial processes and how it handles trust & safety. Just imagine the freakout that would occur (probably led by The Free Press) if a US Attorney during the Biden admin had demanded to know Fox News’ editorial policies and standards and practices, while claiming that they were letting too much propaganda online. The screaming would never stop.

Indeed, what Martin is doing here represents exactly the kind of government interference in editorial decisions that free speech advocates have been warning about. But where are those voices now?"

HRT (Estradiol + Cyproterone) changes - 3 months, potentially NSFW

I guess this is as good a place as any to kind of track progress. I tried doing a daily journal in my OneNote, but I couldn't keep up with it. Only lasted a few days. 😅

Anyway, here are some changes I've noticed for myself over the past few months that I attribute (possibly incorrectly) to HRT. I am not a doctor - this is for entertainment.

Most immediately, I noticed the 'noise floor' in my head quiet down, which I didn't know was possible. Such a strange but welcome feeling.

I think as a byproduct of starting HRT, not necessarily because of it, my mood improved a lot, very early on. Again, I think this was because I jumped through the hurdles I needed to get what I wanted, and I was actively getting the affirming care that I desired.

One of the earliest physical changes I (and my partner) noticed was that my skin was starting to soften on my arms. Noticeably softer than it has been in a very long time, if at all. This started about a month in, and has continued on.

Now, all the skin on my body is so much softer than I can ever remember it being. I was surprised to find my butt, which had relatively rough skin, had turned smooth. Among the top of reasons I believe HRT is magical.

Uhhh, chest growth way earlier than expected. It started with a tingling sensation in my chest, along with some soreness just over two months in.
As I alluded to in one of my "inner struggle with AuDHD" posts, I noticed that my chest was sticking out more than usual one day at work. It wasn't just the sports bra I started wearing - my partner is/was convinced that they grew practically overnight. Just over three months in, and they're both a heaping handful (with medium-large sized hands).

About two to three months in, I noticed most of my body hair started coming in lighter and thinner. Unfortunately, this didn't/doesn't really apply to my facial hair. I'm considering electrolysis in the near future 'cause my ginger hair is generally pretty light, which doesn't help laser's effectiveness, from my understanding.

My finger and toe nails are growing faster, as expected. Admittedly this next part falls under mental health changes more than physical changes. Unexpectedly, I found that I was leaving my nails alone, letting them grow out to the point that they were vulnerable to breaking, chipping, or catching on something (if I had a hangnail or w/e).
I want to point out that I have struggled with nail biting my entire life, and that I have tried various things over the years to curb this habit, and nothing has worked.
Whatever part of my brain that was causing me to bite my nails so much has calmed down and rarely appears anymore.

2-3 months in, freckles.
Holy shit, there are SO MANY freckles. I heard that HRT can cause more freckles to appear, but I had no idea I had all these little orange sleeper cells under my skin just waiting to be activated. HELL YEAH! I love freckles! c:

Mental health changes (various timeframes):

• I actually give a shit about my meat suit and its health
• Showering isn't a massive drain on my executive function despite shaving being an extra add-on task
• Imposter syndrome has only faded as time on HRT moves on
• My anxiety has come down to what I imagine to be 'normal' levels
• Depression? Bye, bitch!

Seriously though, just one month on HRT did more for my mental health than a decade on SSRIs.

There's more I'm sure I'm forgetting, but I'll probably just reply to this thread if/when I remember or have further updates.

I'm generally happy to answer questions if y'all have any! 😊

Given what's goin' on Fosstodon-wise, there is presumably a few more people than usual trying to figure out what their next Fedi home should be. If you already have a bit of a following, my suggestion is not to join an instance, but BE an instance (i.e. set up a personal instance). Here's some related stuff I've written and resources!

I released a bunch of small bug fixes and performance improvements for , the mastodon timeline feed algorithm (though unfortunately it still requires a command line to run I promise I will soon deploy it somewhere anyone can enjoy it as they can with stuff like Phanpy).

Cloning a Windows 11 installation from a 256 Gb SSD to a 2 Tb one. At least the storage slot in a Surface Pro 8 is accessible... I wish the memory was upgradable, and suspect the hard limit on that is likely to be the owner's biggest ongoing pain point...
