What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

How PieFed federates feeds (aka multi-reddits or multi-comms)

Recently PieFed added a way to group communities into collections of related communities, which we called a “Feed”. Unlike Topics, Feeds are federated, can be created by anyone and can be public or private. There are now hundreds of feeds at https://piefed.social/feeds.

A feed being federated means that people using other instances can subscribe to feeds that were created on your instance, in the same way that people can subscribe/join communities on remote instances.

I’ve written up the technical details of how this all works behind the scenes at:

https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/branch/main/docs/activitypub_examples/feeds.md

Trump wants China to buy but not sell, basically, and to eat the costs of tariffs to avoid imposing those costs on Americans, which is never going to work.

Xi and his people have dealt with Trump before, however, and know they just have to politely refuse and wait him out. And in the meantime, they are coaxing Europe to move away from the US and realign with them.

I was a meeting where someone started talking about "vee-bay coding" at length.

I said "you mean vibe coding? like programming by vibes? like good vibrations ala the beach boys?"

They said, "wait, really? that's what it is? i thought it was some new technical term"

I was thinking about PCMCIA and its replacement Express Card and what replaced that...

Sometimes I want to go back in time and explain how weird computers have gotten.

"PCMCIA? nah, we don't do that anymore. Now we just attach external devices to our laptops by running PCIe over the power cable"

the veterans clinic has a sign up advertising an introductory class on how to deal with PTSD

they're calling it "PTSD 101" but the sign is in a sans serif font where the zero is slightly smaller than the 1s are

so it looks like they just have a giant poster on the wall that reads "PTSD LOL"

A friend I hadn't spoken to for a while just messaged me to say she was moving house and taking the washing line down, and to thank me for putting it up five years ago and tying it so securely it never came down. She said she had thought of me every time she used it. Until she reminded me I'd completely forgotten I did that for her.

A lovely reminder that the tiniest things you do can make peoples' lives better without you even knowing it.

interesting thing i've noticed with they/them: i vary between using "themself" or "themselves" varies, but for the most part, i don't really know what my internal criteria for whether to pick one or the other is. however, i recently realised that one of the factors is whether the sentence includes "they".

for example, i'll probably say "they found themselves on the map" - "they found themself on the map" feels off in a way i can't put my finger on. in contrast, "morgan found themself on the map" sounds more natural to me than "morgan found themselves on the map".

So you want to block threads.com and threads.net, but Mastodon UI is making it difficult?

Tip! Use Mastodon's Import function:

1. Create a file, any filename will do as long as it ends with `.csv`. For example: `blocked_domains.csv`.

2. Put these two lines in the file (without the backticks):

```
threads.com
threads.net
```

3. Save the file.

4. Go to the Mastodon import settings (`/settings/imports`).

5. In the form on this page, select import type "Domain blocking list".

6. In the form, select your newly created CSV file as the Data file.

7. In the form, select "Merge " instead of "Overwrite" (this should be the default value) as the import strategy.

8. Upload your file.

9. Profit!

The study aims to better understand content moderation practices, recommender systems, advertising mechanisms, and emerging challenges within the app ecosystem.
