What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

The Open Source Lab (OSL) at Oregon State University (OSU) hosts over 500 projects and is globally important. It faces a funding crisis that will see it shut down later this year if it can't secure $250k from sponsors.

If your company depends on open source software, you probably owe a debt to OSU/OSL. Now is the time to pay that debt.

As I'm new to Sunny Garden, I'd better introduce myself!

Previously on lor.sh, but that's shutting down.
Before that, fosstodon, long before the current debacle.

Into FOSS, Linux, the outdoors.

I am drawn to politics, because it's so in our faces at the moment. Otherwise I probably wouldn't be.

Am anti capitalist, and put people way before profit.

I may edit this toot, as it isn't easy writing about yourself when you're also a privacy advocate!

Lovely to be here, thanks for having me 🙏😊

A new paper, "The Leaderboard Illusion", offers a 68 pages critique of the way the popular Chatbot Arena LLM leaderboard can potentially be gamed by large AI labs with deep pockets. Here's my attempt at adding some extra context to the issues described in the paper.

I need !

Searching for a specific post on men using micro aggressions like voice raising to control a situation against women.

I had it saved for a year then my bookmarks decided to just up and delete 🙃

Been needing it for educational purposes! If anyone has any leads!

appreciated!

*EDIT* *edit* *EdIT*
IT’S (kind of) BEEN FOUND!😬

The one I thought was the link, is a separate one. Apparently I mixed up two different reads. One was a teacher going to a DV shelter, the one I’m looking for is of a man who had gone to college for womens studies only to learn later he was using micro aggressions like raising his voice to control a situation against women. I am looking for the later. I am sorry for the mix up, and I am still looking. I appreciate everyones joining in on the ride 😁

Still can’t find the original but I found something that is similar thats just as good

The fox structured around my logo ended up not cutting it for me. I liked the concept, but execution just wasn't there and I just couldn't get it to look good enough. It was a fun exercise though and led me to end up here. Not sure what I will do with these, but there's definitely room for more exploration and still want to attempt to make an illustrative mascot.

Screenshot of 2 iconic fox illustrations. The left fox is of a kitsune mask, while the right is just a white fox. My Logo is in the middle with the word "kitsune" written in kanji is under it.

fediversereport.com/fediverse-

One of the many insane aspects of how the Fediverse works for me, is that people apparently apply "collective responsibility" for the newly discovered views of a server admin (who stepped down quickly) to all the previously completely unaware users on their server… who are now expected to quickly find a new place to move their accounts to (losing their old posts! since there's no post migration here). How does this make any sense? 😐 @fediversereportConnected Places

When a server moderators holds opinions other people view as problematic, the social cost of these views is partially extended to server users as well. (highlighted section by me:) See for example the account for fediverse streaming platform Owncast, which has an account on the Fosstodon server. Owncast says that they are getting messages that say they need to move servers, otherwise people will see them as Nazis. (end highlight) This blog post about another Fosstodon user explains a similar thought process, where it is rational for them to move to a different server, because they will be associated with the politics of the server moderator in question otherwise.

This behaviour has an impact on how people on the fediverse should find an instance they want to join. It turns out that knowing the political affiliations of server moderators is important, and that this is something that people should know about before joining a server. People will be judged for being on a server that has a moderator with toxic political views. As such, it becomes important for people to know this information beforehand: both that they will get judged for the politics of server moderators, as well as knowing what those political views actually are.

This is another indication of why the process of selecting a server (…) is actually a challenge: important information that should impact server choice is not made available to users, nor is it made clear that this information is important
