Finally getting somewhere working on the next evolution step for . I have a first version that (normally 🙈) doesn't crash quickly (so, no release yet, but it's available on the master branch).

The good news: It's indeed an improvement to have *multiple* parallel (event-loop) threads. It now handles 3000 requests per second on the same hardware, with overall good response times and without any errors. I uploaded the results of the stress test here:

zirias.github.io/swad/stress/

The bad news ... well, there are multiple.

1. It got even more memory hungry. The new stress test still simulates 1000 distinct clients (trying to do more fails on my machine as can't create new threads any more...), but with delays reduced to 1/3 and doing 100 iterations each. This now leaves it with a resident set of almost 270 MiB ... tuning on to return memory more promptly reduces this to 187 MiB (which is still a lot) and reduces performance a bit (some requests run into 429, overall response times are worse). I have no idea yet where to start trying to improve *this*.

2. It requires tuning to manage that load without errors, mainly using more threads for the thread pool, although *these* threads stay almost idle ... which probably means I have to find ways to make putting work on and off these threads more efficient. At least I have some ideas.

3. I've seen a crash which only happened once so far, no idea as of now how to reproduce. *sigh*. Massively parallel code in C really is a PITA.

Seems the more I improve here, the more I find that *should* also be improved. 🤪

Musk destroyed the US civil service, abruptly cancelled aid programs around the world, killing people and damaging US soft power. His teams stole data, harmed science, broke the law. "I was on drugs and had family issues" is not an excuse

Heute unser Festtagsessen 😋

Listening to the @oshwassociationOSHWA community update - a brilliant past 12 months hitting over 3000 OSHW Certifications, a 24 hour shareathon, 7 months of regular show-and-tells - fantastic momentum *AND* they brought to the UK, which just shows how great they are 🙂 OK: I'm a supporter and I may be slighly biased, but: the stories of projects and their impact via the talks today, shows the value of open source, collaboration, and making things available to make life better for others). 👏🏻

Hot take: ISO standards do not meaningfully matter to me, because an extremely impoverished, unbanked person cannot freely access their contents from a smartphone or library computer.

Therefore, I go out of my way to avoid referring to them or relying on them in anyway.

It’s Friday! It’s nearly June! How the heck did that happen?! Here’s our selection of stories from independent newsrooms and a few that caught the Flipboard editorial team’s eye. And while there’s hard-hitting journalism in there (we live in hard-hitting times), there’s more than our usual number of inspiring, positive stories of hope and beauty amidst destruction and oppression. @timkmakTim Mak’s team writes about secret apartment concerts in Ukraine. @TheConversationUS’s story is about “bone music” in Soviet Russia. We’ll end with a Tiny Desk concert from @npr to take you into the weekend. Please follow independent publishers on the open social web, engage with their stories, and donate money if you can. ⤵️

One of the numerical exponents that was improved via Deepmind's AlphaEvolve (AE) tool (as part of a collaboration I am involved in) has just been improved: arxiv.org/abs/2505.16105

The question concerns the best exponent θ for which one can construct large sets of integers A,B with |A+B| = O(|A|) and |A-B| >> |A|^θ. The previous best construction, due to Gyamarti, Hennecart, and Ruzsa in 2007, gave a lower bound of 1.14465; our group was able to use AlphaEvolve to obtain the improvement 1.1584; and this new paper obtains 1.173050. (The best known upper bound is 4/3.)

All constructions proceed by first locating an auxiliary finite set U of integers with good properties. The original construction of Gyamarti et al. was a set of cardinality 30000 or so, constructed according to a specific recipe; AE did an unconstrained search and found an example of cardinality 54265 that gave the better bound; and the new paper returns to (a modification) of the original construction but with much larger parameters to find (with computer assistance) a set with more than 10^43546 elements.

It is tempting to simplify this to a zero-sum narrative of "winners" and "losers", but I think it is great that different approaches can complement each other here to make mathematical progress. The advantages of an AE-type approach are more in the direction of breadth rather than depth; one can use AE to scan large ranges of problems to identify places where the literature could be improved, and human experts (perhaps also assisted by computers) can then focus attention on these problems to make further progress.

Just overheard 2 workers building the house next door:

Worker 1: Know any trans women?
Worker 2: Yeah, my kid’s GF

Worker 1: Your kid’s a homo?
Worker 2: She calls it queer

Worker1: What do you call it?
Worker2: Her god damn business. Fuck off.
