What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I started my career in tech as a technical writer, but that was only because I wanted to become a webmaster (which I achieved after a year). Living the web dream in the 90s…

I only had a few fleeting moments to catch the today. But wow was I so glad to have been there!

@_elenaElena Rossini ⁂ premiered a new video that introduces the fediverse to mainstream social users, and it was very well produced. I got a little emotional about it! I believe it will be released on PeerTube within the week.

Something to look forward to, and share generously. You'll want to shake the cobwebs off your old Twitter and Facebook accounts and post it! :)

@jupiter_rowland

I didn't know Hubzilla had been doing quote-posts for so long — very cool.

I know Misskey and its various forks have had quote-posts working for a while, too.

I think also Pleroma and Akkoma have, too.

Mastodon is the latest to add support for quote-posts, not the first. But, I am happy that Mastodon has it.

...

Mastodon's quote-posts seems Twitter-like, so I suppose that is as intended (if that is what you meant).

okay #golang I want to fight.

why the FUCK is the fucking reference date January 2, 2006 when you cannot tell just by looking at "01" and "02" which one is a month and which one is a day, and when most of the world uses the properly nested YYYY-MM-DD or DD-MM-YYYY but the fucking US insists on, like, MM-DD-YYYY.

and if you are only using the last two digits of the year it's even worse. 06-01-02: is it 6 January, 2002? June 1, 2002? February 1, 2006? June 2, 2001?!

something like December 31, 1969 is far less ambiguous. "31" can't be a month, "69" can be neither a month nor a day.

go? more like STOP

It just can't be the case that I'm the only computer geek who played AD&D as a child and now finds themselves with enough management duties that they spend more time than they'd like looking at spreadsheets.

If that describes you as well, tell me something. On those situations where you are looking at cell D20 in , do you internally process the string “D20” as “twenty-sided die” ?

When I drag my cursor to the bottom right hand corner of my screen, this happens. If pressed, I could tell you a tedious story about the series of interactions which makes this a normal and predictable thing to happen. But it only happens once every few months and it delights me every time.

Update: YouTube has just reinstated the video, after what I presume is a human review process. I wish it didn't take making noise on socials to get past the 'AI deny' process :(

Go forth, and self-host all the things! youtube.com/watch?v=3hFas54xFtg

I have a piece of spam, almost certainly LLM-derived, which made it through my filters. This is highly customized spam which, given other parameters, would probably have fooled me momentarily given the very specific attributes of my writing that they are referencing (until I got to the "guest post" part of the pitch, which is always a dead giveaway). But the subject line is absolute chefs-kiss perfection:

"Re: i love panic attack mention"

Hey, folks who understand alt text and limited vision accessibility:

I have need to write alt text for the diagram below. The alt text needs to be comprehensible to somebody who is encountering this kind of diagram for the ••very first time••. I could describe the images using the relevant jargon, but that would only serve people who already know the thing this activity is teaching them!

Any suggestions for how I could write good alt text for something like this? Is it possible? (The horizontal black bars are minus signs, i.e. subtraction. This is clear from context in the text, but probably not clear in the image.)

PLEASE NOTE: I am looking for people with ••relevant accessibility expertise••, not just random best shots from people who (like me) don’t really know much about this kind of problem.

A diagram showing three arithmetic expressions as tree, which I am struggling to describe in this alt text.

One of my favourite gigs this year (but there are many) was wachi 蛙池 in Tokyo in April. From Guangdong Province in China, it was one of most joyful and energetic shows I've seen recently. Not many people know them outside China (even in Tokyo the majority of the audience was Chinese), so here we go...
