What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Regarding the protests:

I feel strongly that the _only_ way the regime can truly be defeated is via mass protests.

When Hitler took over the Weimar Republic, there _weren't_ any large-scale protests. Most Germans just went along with it and minded their own business, and thus the Nazis could do whatever they wanted.

But if there are mass protests in the streets - as there are currently in the USA, then this sends a powerful message to the supporters of the regime. Remember how quickly Google, Facebook, and other companies bent their knees at the inauguration and afterwards? That's because they figured they had much to gain by supporting Trump, and there were little in the way of negative consequences for doing so.

Mass protests send a different message. They show that there is real anger and wrath in the general public about what Trump is doing, and this makes clear to all the quislings that there is a real price to supporting Trump. Maybe some of them will reconsider, and become less conciliatory to the government.

And this goes for the rest of society, too. Police, military, the courts - none of them are immune to public opinion. If they believe they have nothing to lose from subservience to Trump, then they will do so. But if there is a real cost - in public perception, in self-image, and so forth - then maybe they will question their orders.

Anyway: Godspeed, and keep it up.

PEPPER SPRAY PAIN RELIEF

I was a volunteer subject in these randomized, double-blind trials to find a treatment for pepper spray discomfort. The only thing found to be better than water was a 1:1 solution of water and liquid antacid — aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide-based, such as Maalox or Mylanta. Use plain or mint, but a physician and street medic friend asked me to stress that *mint* is best.

“The Black Cross Healthcare Collective was a group of healthcare workers who lived in Portland, Oregon. They formed after the WTO protests of 1999, after seeing a need for medical care that specifically served people who were attending direct actions, demonstrations and political protests.”

"In the early 2000s they pioneered community-supported trials to find an antidote to pepper spray. These trials resulted in an antidote that has been used in street protests internationally.”

Molotov cocktails are illegal in most US states. A fascist coup is illegal everywhere. As are cosplay nazis acting on behalf of that fascist coup.

I’m not saying you should make/use Molotov cocktails as self-defense. But if you do, you should know how to do it safely, effectively, and properly.

I’m not confirming or denying that I wrote this how-to. But if you’re curious…

Kind of a weird UX question @julian : when dealing with remote categories, is it preferable to sync a local category with a remote one? Or is it better to use the “World” view to look up a remote category, and just set that to “Tracking”?

I like the idea of federating with other forums, but want to better understand each use-case.

x.com/ogochan/status/193135914

Just a reminder that the original Myst was developed using HyperCard, one of Bill Atkinson’s many masterpieces.

But I’ll always remember how he thought overlapping windows (or perhaps the smooth movement of windows over each other) was a solveable problem because he recalled seeing that Xerox had solved it (they hadn’t), so he just worked it out because he then thought it could be.

An amazing mind, now lost to us.

RIP Bill, and thank you!
