What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RIP Brian Wilson.

Highly recommend watching Love and Mercy - it's quite an emotionally tough watch, so don't go in expecting a pop film.

IIRC the Wrecking Crew documentary also had some great insight into him and his ideas.

Left: Someone suggests a problem I am trying to solve with Rust could have been solved with C++

Right: Someone suggests a problem I am trying to solve with Rust could have been solved with Go

Ray Smuckles: "That just makes me SO mad! SO so mad! Oh my LORD I can't believe how angry I am right now!"Ray Smuckles: Oh, you're right. I guess I been meanin' to learn a little Go

"For Pearce, this is 'absolutely a divide-&-rule tactic' to break the long-standing solidarity between trans & lesbian communities. She points to how the EHRC’s guidance restricting trans presence in lesbian organizations can further prevent… organizing together…"

@glyph This article gets at a lot of things that I think are very on point. Specifically:

1. that supervising a semi-autonomous machine is wildly unlike doing the same work yourself. It's work that humans are phenomenally bad at. Literally, a huge driver behind inventing automation in the first place was to save us from having to do constant, high vigilance supervision, because we just simply can't.

2. that the framing, anchoring, and filtering that LLMs do is a deep, critical, pervasive, and widely ignored risk that probably cannot be mitigated. As soon as you insert one of them into a workflow or communication stream, then you've limited what's possible to do or think or say to what an LLM can and will reproduce.

When we throw up our hands and say none of it matters, we're doing the fascists’ work for them. They don't need to hide their corruption if they can convince us it's pointless to look. They don't need to silence truth-tellers if we've already decided truth is meaningless.

Things libc will never do (broad but not comprehensive):

- Nag you to update.
- Phone home to check it if should nag you to update.
- Tell you a CVE can't be fixed without updating to the latest version.
- Try to force you to switch from glibc to musl.
- Get other software you depend on dependent on musl.
- Rant against "wokeness" or "DEI".
- Integrate "AI" into your libc.
- Give you up.
- Let you down.

New intro
(because that's what you do when you move to a new instance, right?)

I've just moved servers: from a self-hosted mastodon instance to a self-hosted gotosocial instance, everything is a work in progress.

In the meantime, I post in English and/or Dutch about politics (I try to CW), silly household solutions, cross stitch embroidery and patchwork quilting.

It seems most of my online presence is a work in progress (ignoring all previous instructions) while I try to DeBigTech my life.

Hi! :neocat_shadefingers:

I think this is my first introduction ever in de fediverse! ⁂

There is a button in the upper right of my firefox that looks like a chest of drawers. If I click it, it used to let me click "open tabs" and then search my open tabs. Since the last version update, this area is only blank white. Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it

On the left it says "Firefox View… Open tabs", the right is blank

"Donald Trump’s director of national intelligence fed the JFK files into an AI program, asking it to see if there was anything that should remain classified, she told a crowd at an Amazon Web Services conference Tuesday"

Is there any way we can convince The Onion to not keep publishing their stuff under different domain names? 🤪

뭐라는 거시여

We eventually end up with constraints of the shape “τconτdis\tau_\text{con} \leq \tau_\text{dis}” and there always exists a τiτcon\tau_i \in \tau_\text{con} and τjτdis\tau'_j \in \tau_\text{dis} such that we can reduce the constraint to an equivalent constraint τiτj\tau_i \leq \tau'_j.” (Parreaux and Chau, 2022, p. 10)

When I heard the mom of a trans girl say the night her daughter came out to her was the first time she'd ever seen her child happy, I knew it was a story I needed to share. These are the stories the public isn't hearing. An honor to get to report on 3 family's journeys for @teenvogue.com.

"why doesn't anyone make a truly decentralized Fediverse"

bro HOW would you do that practically

like if you've figured out the secret then please tell us, how would you make a fully decentralized peer-to-peer federation protocol that works the same as fedi

not all engineering problems can be solved
