What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

it's really wild to me that people are having trouble identifying the newest AI generated videos as fake. apparently some people in the comments are convinced that half the clips in this video are real actors pretending to be fake?? to me it's pretty obvious that it's all generated. youtu.be/FERa1AI2EK8

A user "sender" needs the following permissions set to send a ZFS dataset:

# zfs allow -u sender send,snapshot txpool

On the receiving side, the user "receiver" requires these permissions:

# zfs allow -u receiver compression,mountpoint,mount,create,receive rxpool

General Fediverse question.

Sooner or later, the Fediverse will hit the point where somebody's individual node in their closet is the primary posting source for incredibly popular high bandwidth content, like a primary source news clip. As currently architected, the system will hug that data to death when individuals who do not have accounts on an equivalent fediverse server go requesting that content (and possibly also when 100 nodes of the given service go requesting the content).

Are there any projects to do content distribution networks or other multiplexed and more local caching for fediverse content? What would that even look like?

We’re kicking off the 2025 maintain-a-thon today at UN Open Source Week! It’s taking place in the Economic and Social Council Chamber of the UN in New York. This is perfect because maintaining public digital infrastructure is fundamental to economic and social development.

The maintain-a-thon follows an unconference format. The FOSS experts from our delegation proposed core topics grounded in real-world experience with open source maintenance.

One of the Dreamliners That Gave a Boeing Manager Nightmares Just Crashed: Whistleblowers always warned that passengers would pay a price for Boeing’s tyrannical corner-cutting, especially with the planes shipped overseas prospect.org/economy/2025-06-1

How many innocent travelers have to die because of corner-cutting? If this is not the last stage of capitalism, then I don't know what is.

Weird Computer Contest
A contest to see the strangest computer being used to read mastodon/the fediverse. The prize is a cool drawing from me just for you.

Rules:

1. Post a reply to show your device and why it is strange. Can mean hardware and software. A photo is better.
2. You can't go *too* much out of your way to use some goofy device that you don't ever really use.
3. Winner selected by general consensus.

This is *not* just an excuse to see/post photos of strange computers.

@futurebirdmyrmepropagandist I'm using (relatively) normal hardware, BUT...

The laptop (Panasonic Toughbook) on my desk is just an X-terminal. Firefox is actually running on my server, which is in a Connection Machine cabinet that I'm using as a 19" rack. (The Connection Machine is a legendary supercomputer from the 80s. They only made 30 of them. One is currently at MOMA, one is at the Smithsonian, etc., etc.)

So... normal server, sitting in what is perhaps the coolest 19" rack ever made. (The CM was, sadly, empty when i got it.)

A small densely packed room. There is a supercomputer on the left, a desk in the middle, and bookshelves on the right. The cat is named Salome.

Come on , if you can, put some money where your heart is. The people from Framasoft are working hard on and are only looking for €75.000. With less than 40 hours to go, you can be part of the difference we want to see in the world :)

Soon we will be able to livestream from our smartphone to the fediverse!

Framasoft is a French non-profit, based in Lyon.
