Israel hasn't stopped gunning down the Palestinians they're starving, as those Palestinians try to feed themselves There is nothing wrong with continuing to say it: these are war crimes, this is genocide, this is murder. It must be stopped, and those perpetrating the crimes must be held accountable

1 week ago, Spain was plunged into darkness, and in the days that followed a traditional / social media firestorm cynically exploited the catastrophe: blaming it on Spain's solar power and calling for more fossil fuels and nuclear to 'save' the grid.

So: I decided to look at the longer-term data, and I found that nuclear power in Spain was operating at its lowest levels of generation in at least ten years (if not longer). We have almost no information on why, but one operator blamed power prices being too cheap to run nuclear.

I have been pretty bloody stunned at the total absence of media questions around Spain's nuclear fleet, why so much capcacity was being intentionally withheld at the time of the blackout, and what their stated rationalisations mean for the future of grid stability, power prices and variable renewable energy.

So - here's a hefty, data-driven write-up for you. Enjoy! :)

I have written down my privacy-first design process for @encyclia and how it relates to Fediverse standards and social norms, and turned the result into a poster presentation for the upcoming ECSCW 2025 conference. 🙂

fietkau.science/orcid_fedivers

The poster itself is attached, but also available as a (hopefully accessible) PDF on my website. It's accompanied by a written article too because academics like documentation. 😄

Catch me in Newcastle if you're nearby in two weeks! ecscw.eusset.eu/2025/

ORCID and the Fediverse: What Can We Do with Public Information?
Julian Fietkau, University of the Bundeswehr Munich
ORCID is an identification scheme and bibliographic database for academics that aims to make information about researchers’ works widely and easily accessible.
The Fediverse is a collection of interoperable social media platforms where people can follow each other across platform boundaries to read and share text posts or other media.
Motivation: Building a system to make ORCID records followable on the Fediverse and taking a closer look at expectations around the handling of public information that people submit to either platform.
Observations ORCID: purpose sharing data widely and easily, scope published academic works, access web, APIs, bulk downloads, permissions copyright disclaimed and reuse without restrictions.
Observations Fediverse: purpose sharing with followers and visitors, scope everyday life updates, access web, APIs, permissions reading, republishing frowned upon.
Potential for conflicts when connecting these two environments.
Will ORCID users prefer to have their publication data shared more widely by default (opt-out), or to not have it shown in the Fediverse without explicit permission (opt-in)? Will Fediverse users object to an opt-out ORCID integration, even if it is one-way only?
Approach: Estimate potential consequences through a theoretical impact analysis.
