What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@julijane it’s not so black and white. If you are an unpaid maintainer you have no obligation to put in extra work, for sure. But if you do take down the banking system of a country once (still not your fault!) and people tell you your library is broken… I think you start having a responsibility to either deprecate it, fix it, or at least warn users. We live in a society.

@filippoFilippo Valsorda :go:

Maybe, as a bank, you should not be using a random library taken from the internet, with a single maintainer and some 100 stars, and make it a critical dependency of your banking operations.

Maybe, as a bank, your IT should write and maintain such a library and open source it.

Maybe, as a bank, you should not continue to use the first library, and do the second thing after the first library was able to take down critical parts of your infra the first time.

Because we live in a society, and as a bank, you should be contributing to it, too.

But then, what do I know.

Jake finally met some other dogs today (he’s fully vaccinated against parvo, rabies, etc)

He was so scared of them at first, but came around, it was adorable!

I’ll be posting some vids to Loops after the big announcement 😉

The argument for extending copyright beyond fourteen years was that some works of art take time to be recognised and build a following - which seems fair enough.

But the opposite argument needs to be made for works with faster returns. Half that (7 years) should be plenty for software.

Culture moves so fast now, but copyright terms have gotten longer. A movie gets judged as a failure on a single weekend of revenue, but copyright law claims that it wouldn't be made without a 120 year monopoly!

Nick Wellnhofer: "I just stepped down as libxslt maintainer and it's unlikely that this project will ever be maintained again. It's even more unlikely with Google Project Zero, the best white-hat security researchers money can buy, breathing down the necks of volunteers."

In the olden days of Open Source and Free Software, bug reports would come as a fix attached to a problem description. Just sending a bug report and demanding a fix was seen as lazy and wrong.
