What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

With Mastodon v4.4.0 instance owners can enable HTTP referrers. That means:

If somebody clicks a link in a Mastodon post (e.g. to a news article), the link target owner (such as the news site operator) can see that a user from that instance has visited their website.

They do _only_ get the instance domain (e.g. metalhead.club). No information about the user!

I've enabled this setting, because I am sure that it will increase awareness of Mastodon's existence. 💪

Edit: (in previous versions, Mastodon did not send referrer-Headers)

Screenshot shows setting for enabling the referrer.

Here @ddrakeDan Drake 🦆 gets at something important: programming languages aren’t just a pile of syntax and features. They have context, motivations, idioms, expectations, communities. These things are all interrelated; in fact, they are all •part of the language•. And they are the things a language guide should communicate.

(looking at you Helinox)

A look at the state of , as it turns 10. It’s getting traction in some areas (though notably game engines aren’t one of them), though a pain point is its low-level model and lack of any standard implementation of structured types or garbage collection making interfacing with dynamic languages, or indeed the web DOM, a pain. As with Java, though, the web may not be where it ends up.

Exciting to see the first code running on ! Edoardo has rebased the Kent work on a newer rustc and added the CHERIoT bits so we can now add two integers together in Rust!

Probably other things work too. The core library compiles, but not much of it is tested. Cross-compartment calls aren’t possible yet and the alloc crate needs implementing wrapping our shared heap (there’s also a fun project at UBC to replace our allocator with a formally verified one in Rust, but it’s not there yet and, of course, depends on Rust working).

I am under no illusions about the likelihood that any of the recommendations below would be implemented by the current administration, but I still think it is worth reiterating the conclusions of the 2023 working group report bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/w on Extreme Weather, which I was proud to be a member of. An abridged version of the main recommendations is listed below.

1.1. U.S. climate-modeling centers (supported by NOAA, NSF, DOE, and NASA) should enhance their high-resolution modeling capabilities and state-of-the-art statistical methods to quantify annual extreme weather risks.

1.2. The White House should designate a lead agency to maintain an extreme weather data portal where observations and modeling products are regularly updated and widely accessible.

2.1. Designate an interagency group to inventory and release federal data that are useful to develop and test weather-hazard models and hazard-loss models.

2.2 NOAA, FEMA, and other agencies as the President deems necessary, should develop guidelines for measuring the accuracy of weather-hazard and hazard-loss models and promote the use of skill-scoring hazards.

2.3 Fund research on risk-assessment modeling systems that use extreme weather probabilities, weather-hazard models, and hazard-loss models to quantify the likelihood and economic costs of extreme weather events.

3.1 The White House should develop and publish a National Adaptation Plan to prepare for and mitigate increased risks from extreme weather.

3.2 Fund research on the adaptation of households, real-estate and insurance
markets, and local governments to changing climate and extreme weather risk.

About a half-hour ago I deployed the change that stopped traffic to Glitch projects.

A major chapter of my life (and a small-but-cool part of the geography of the internet) closes.

I'm sorry to see the easiest, friendliest, least stressful, most welcoming way to create for the web come to an end.

I'm sorry for the teachers, students, and creators who we're forcing to find another home for their work.

I'm sorry for what the web lost today.
