The Halifax airport has a local-stuff-only liquor store with a big beer selection, which made me wonderโ€ฆ why doesnโ€™t Vancouver have this? We have the best beer in the country, feels like you should be able to buy that when flying through here.

Explain!! ๐Ÿ˜ป๐Ÿ˜†

OK! Here it is:

The Japanese text (ใƒใ‚ณ้ฃ›ๅ‡บใ—ๆณจๆ„) translates to โ€œWatch out for jumping catsโ€ or more literally โ€œCaution: Cats dashing outโ€.

Itโ€™s a local road sign sometimes put up in Japanese neighborhoods where there are many stray or outdoor cats. The flying-cat graphics are just a playful way to show that cats might suddenly run across the street, so drivers should slow down and be careful.

A Japanese road sign shaped like a yellow diamond shows three cartoon-style black cats leaping in different directions, as if jumping or flying. Below the cats, Japanese text reads โ€œใƒใ‚ณ้ฃ›ๅ‡บใ—ๆณจๆ„,โ€ which translates to โ€œCaution: Cats dashing out.โ€ A paw print symbol is also included. The sign is mounted on a white pole beside tall bushes and a residential house, with power lines and a cloudy sky in the background. White overlay text on the photo says, โ€œIโ€™m not sure if I want to knowโ€ฆ..โ€

It's so I'll point out I and others will be presenting at a dedicated Fediverse track with twelve (!) presentations in one day at in November.

Hopefully our attendance will spur SFSCon into creating an account somewhere Fediversal...

You can review the Fediverse track at sfscon.it/programs/2025/ (choose Fediverse in the drop down)

Who are your favorite #Fediverse bloggers that bring fresh, interesting takes on whatโ€™s going on around the network?

The more I try to dig to find other people writing about this stuff, the more challenging it is to find. I dig through Lemmy and Piefed communities, Flipboard, Surf feeds, RSS feeds, my timelines, and I always feel like thereโ€™s more that Iโ€™m missing out on somewhere.

Would you use a self-hosted tool that ingests the mbox (gmail) file from google takeout, indexes all emails and let you search through it? The idea is that it would be an email archive. I feel like it would be useful for people who want to de-google. Being able to search through your emails without having to import them to your new provider is something that I would appreciate. I don't like clutter, and I barely have to pull old emails. Let me know your thoughts!

i really wish browsers let you define your own handlers for import attributes.

like, imagine you could do something like this. it would let pretty much any language be used in the browser without a build step:

- strip types from typescript
- compile JSX/svelte/vue/etc into JS
- compile sass into CSS
- compile webgl/webgpu shaders?

there are probably problems i'm not thinking of. but it'd be super powerful!

// import.registerAttribute registers a handler that runs
// when a specific import attribute key matches the given string
import.registerAttribute("html", async response => {
  // `response` is a Response object with the result of the imported file
  const html = await response.text();

  // the return value is used as the imported object
  return new DOMParser().parseFromString(html, "text/html");
});

// setting the key `custom` to a registered string
// causes that handler to process the import
import hello from "./hello.html" with { custom: "html" };

document.documentElement.append(hello.children);
