Multispecies Dialogues by Eva Meijer, 2025

Doing Philosophy with Animals, Children, the Sea and Others

In Multispecies Dialogues Eva Meijer develops a new understanding of the concept ‘dialogue’, which includes embodied, material and spatial interaction. Meijer does not do this alone: each chapter of the book is devoted to a dialogue, or set of dialogues...

 Taking multispecies dialogues seriously is a way to do justice to more-than-human agency and to become more worldly in a time dominated by humans. Rethinking the model of the dialogue also opens up new ways of doing philosophy in multispecies world, which is urgently needed to address the ecological, political and philosophical problems of our time.

Talk to anyone who participated in National Speech & Debate or some similar organization. Ask them what they think of the current crop of intellectual “debaters”, particularly the ones who tour college campuses. Their attitude is basically that of someone who doesn’t like pro wrestling talking about pro wrestling.

@glyph Hi. Former National Forensic League high school debater . Participated in Nationals in 1989. I would very much like to co-sign this entire thread and note that many of us from my school consider the critical thinking skills we obtained from debate as being the most important thing we learned. And we mock this bullshit without mercy.

Sometimes, when coding your own thing, you do little things to make yourself happy even if it isn't _strictly in scope_ of the feature you're building.

I'm adding writing fields to . I needed to rewrite the output code to make that work - which meant I'm moving (eventually) all output to Jinja2 templates rather.

And, to make me happy: I added ANSI color when using interactively to the new default template.

ScrumMD card in terminal. The headings and titles highlighted in color.

Text reads:
---
cli001: Display basic collection from cards
---

status: Done

# description

A basic collection is a folder in the `scrum` folder containing md cards.

By default, all cards are in the inventory. There's no filters being applied at the moment.

For now, a card must have a summary. Other fields are optional. Fields are defined either in obsidian style properties:

```md
---
Property 1: Value
Property 2: Value
---
```

or by the text following a hash header with.

A card's index is currently its filename.

# cucumber

**GIVEN** a collection of cards, and a collection folder _C_.
**WHEN** `sbl C` is run.
**THEN** a table showing the index and description all the cards in the collection is shown.

Fighting Nature by PetaTait, 2015

Travelling Menageries, Animal Acts and War Shows

Fighting Nature is an insightful analysis of the historical legacy of 19th century colonialism, war, animal acquisition and transportation. This legacy of entrenched beliefs about the human right to exploit other animal species is yet to be defeated.

directory.doabooks.org/handle/

Throughout the 19th century animals were integrated into staged scenarios of confrontation, ranging from lion acts in small cages to large-scale re-enactments of war. Initially presenting a handful of exotic animals, travelling menageries grew to contain multiple species in their thousands. These 19th-century menageries entrenched beliefs about the human right to exploit nature through war-like practices against other animal species. Animal shows became a stimulus for antisocial behaviour as locals taunted animals, caused fights, and even turned into violent mobs. Human societal problems were difficult to separate from issues of cruelty to animals.

Colonialism, Culture, Whales The Cetacean Quartet by Graham Huggan, 2018

Explores how our attitudes to whales, whale hunting, and whale watching expose colonial attitudes to the natural world in modern Western culture. Foraging across the disciplines and moving between ideas and methods drawn from postcolonial criticism, animal studies, and environmental humanities...

directory.doabooks.org/handle/

the book critically examines the colonial histories of whaling, their legacies in contemporary tourism from whale-watching excursions to the performing orcas at SeaWorld, and cultural representations of anxieties about extinction in recent literature, television, and film. Extensively researched and engagingly written, the four essays that comprise The Cetacean Quartet should appeal to scholars in a number of different fields as well as to general readers interested in finding out more about our enduring, guilt-ridden fascination with one of the world's most iconic living creatures, the whale.

bad news: they only allow you to choose from six emojis.

microsoft, PLEASE allow arbitrary emoji reactions. please update your code to parse all the weird emoji edge cases like the country flags and zero-width-joiner-family-amalgamate things. i NEED to 🧐 react to phishing emails

emoji reaction selector. the available options are: thumbs up, heart, party popper, laughing while crying, shocked, and sad face with a single tear
