After many years of mostly WFH, the original Oxide custom keyboard is back in its original habitat -- at my original desk! -- in Emeryville.

I've upgraded its brain to the reCODE rev C of course.

A mid sized mechanical keyboard on a desk with a Thinkpad. The key caps are white, green, and charcoal, which were the Oxide brand colors until about 2022.

When (Google) X moved into our new digs in 2015, I suggested naming the conference rooms after dead products to keep us humble: Newton, Edsel, etc. This did not go over well.

At Oxide I've got my choice of dead computer company mugs each morning, and guess what our naming scheme for our conference rooms is....

(Oh I made that sign out of walnut and oak)

Anyway, culture fit could be much worse

A selfie in front of a conference room sign reading "Control Data" while holding a mug that reads "Amdahl."

About 16 years ago Apple released "Snow Leopard", a new major version of Mac OS X that had no new user-facing features and focused mostly on stability and bug fixes.

And people fucking loved it.

Sounds so weird looking back from today.

macOS Tahoe UI has a HUGE new feature for folks like me who have 24/7 Mac Minis running and access them remotely: you can now type the boot password remotely via SSH!

Power on the Mac, then SSH to it. A simple SSH server will handle your request. Typing the password there is equivalent to typing it on the keyboard. The connection then closes and the machine boots normally.

Combine this with "Start up automatically after a power failure" and you can ditch that KVM!

"ZFS support in Linux distributions varies. The broader Linux community questions the compatibility between the GPL and the CDDL and in response, distributions have added and removed installer ZFS support. Intellectual property attorneys who have considered CDDL/GPL compatibility often say “it’s an interesting question,” which is lawyerese for “$500 an hour and the hearing’s gonna be *lit*.” This doesn’t matter to users, but operating system vendors are risk-adverse. The result? OpenZFS considers Linux a top-tier platform. Most Linux distributions do not consider ZFS a top-tier filesystem."

No, no sponsorships yet. Gotta finish the last crowdfund before starting another. (Stupid ethics!)

“I fear the car is the predictive historical model [for LLMs]: small wins for individuals + huge wins for a handful → massive externalities and collective action problems that will take generations to fix.” – @luis_in_briefLuis Villa

The language of “wins” aside, this is the most correct take. IMO, the nigh-Butlerian inability to concede that LLMs might deliver *any* gains of *any* scale for *any* party we so often see here impedes both analytic clarity & credibility with low-engagement interlocutors.
