After two weeks of writing, revising, and trying to make everything as digestible as possible, I finally published "GNOME Calendar: A New Era of Accessibility Achieved in 90 Days", where I explain in detail the steps we took to turn GNOME Calendar from an app that was literally unusable with a keyboard and screen reader to an app that is (finally) accessible to keyboard and screen reader users as of GNOME 49!

GNOME Calendar: A New Era of Accessibility Achieved in 90 Days
There is no calendaring app that I love more than GNOME Calendar. The design is slick, it works extremely well, it is touchpad friendly, and best of all, the community around it is just full of wonderful developers, designers, and contributors worth collaborating with, especially with the recent community growth and engagement over the past few years. Georges Stavracas and Jeff Fortin Tam are some of the best maintainers I have ever worked with. I cannot express how thankful I am of Jeff’s underappreciated superhuman capabilities to voluntarily coordinate huge initiatives and issue trackers. One of Jeff’s many initiatives is gnome-calendar#1036: the accessibility initiative, which is a big and detailed list of issues related to accessibility. In my opinion, GNOME Calendar’s biggest problem was the lack of accessibility support, which made the app completely unusable for people exclusively using a keyboard, or people relying on assistive technologies. This article will explain in details about the fundamental issues that held back accessibility in GNOME Calendar since the very beginning of its existence (12 years at a minimum), the progress we have made with accessibility as well as our thought process in achieving it, and the now and future of accessibility in GNOME Calendar.

- Could this help with the Mastodon "hug of death" (because the server can generate a simpler version of the page, caches can behave differently etc) where many instances rush to generate preview cards driving the previewed site offline?
@mcc This is an interesting idea. I wonder if doing this with an Accept: header in the request would be a good way to do it and fall back to the HTML otherwise? No need to add anything to the protocol itself then, and content type negotiation is already quite broadly implemented

@mcc i think ive posted before about an idea for what is basically http HEAD but it also returns html <head>. or otherwise some http headers that fulfill the same use case as opengraph, so the existing http HEAD can return those.

Hey security vendors: Maybe try not calling threat actors "low skilled" or "script kiddies" just because a particular attack or exploit was not "sophisticated." You may have observed them hitting low hanging fruit in this instance but when they inevitably pants your customers and you suddenly start calling them "sophisticated" I'm going to call you out, especially in sales and support calls.
I had a weird situation where I had a root shell on a remote Linux server that was experiencing a file system issue. No userspace commands were working except my shell builtins (echo, cd, and so on). I decided to reboot, but the "reboot" command, "init 6", "systemctl reboot", and "shutdown" commands wouldn't work. I couldn't visit the system in person and there was no remote power option.
Just a reminder that when all else is lost you can hard reboot a Linux system remotely via /proc/sys (assuming you happen to have a root shell on the machine):
echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq
echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger
This is a hard reboot. There's no file system sync, your databases go down hard, and this can really ruin your day. But just remember this little trick if you get painted into a corner.
Ironwood sea turtle
Ironwood has long been used by the Seri people (Comcáac) for making harpoon tips so hard that they can puncture the shell of sea turtles.
