me, holding a container of assorted alphabet beads: I wonder if there's enough of the rare letters or like if you can't make a necklace if your name is Xerxes

(I look closely at the beads that are legible around the edges of the label. Of the 16 letters I can make out, 5 are 'X')

me: I now have a different concern about the distribution of these letters.

23 September 1944 | Probably on this day, due to the decommissioning of Bunker No. II, the SS carried out a selection among the prisoners of the Sonderkommando. More than 200 of them were taken from Birkenau and—under the pretext of being transferred to one of the subcamps—were taken to the area of the so-called Kanada I warehouses. There, they were deceitfully led into a disinfection chamber and murdered with Zyklon B.

The bodies of the victims were transported to crematorium III and burned.

Do you ever feel like a wattle-necked softshell turtle (Palea steindachneri)? You are not alone. Found in parts of Southeastern China and Vietnam, this rare reptile’s carapace, or shell, can grow up to 17 in (43.2 cm) long. It inhabits freshwater pools and feeds on fish, insects, and small invertebrates. Unfortunately, this critically endangered species is threatened due in part to habitat degradation and being hunted for the food trade.

A first-hand account from a Palestinian journalist working for The Intercept from Gaza:

"The city resembles the scenes of apocalyptic films: stories of the end of the world, of human catastrophe, of global wars.

Its homes stand deserted, its streets emptied, resembling a desert wasteland. Death encircles it from every direction. The city drowns in chaos, just like my heart. The city is collapsing gradually, and my soul is crumbling with it."
