What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Simplenote is an Automattic product. I notice that Automattic toward the end of last year had these major administrative problems that seemed to lead to mass engineer exoduses. I can't help but wonder if Automattic has finally started to lose the people who can keep their software working and/or replacing them with "AI". A rock solid product (which only works if it is rock solid) has now started developing new strange problems every other week.

@mcc I tried reporting a bug in Automatticโ€™s Pocket Casts a while ago and they had an AI chatbot respond to it. Then after I eventually convinced it to show the report to a human it got bounced back to the AI because I was busy for two days and couldnโ€™t respond immediately. I gave up on reporting bugs to them after that. Iโ€™d guess others have as well as itโ€™s only been accumulating bugs since then

How old were you the first time your parents left you home alone for a few hours? Not overnight, just a few hours or less in the afternoon or evening.

Even if you don't believe like I do that a well resourced Servo project provides our best path out of the Google Web and into a new Open Web, I think many of you might find it interesting to read the monthly updates to see how a modern web engine comes together. It's juuuuust a little bit more complex and neat than NetPositive, the first browser I worked on.

related to the Git cheat sheet I mentioned last week git-scm.com/cheat-sheet, I'm thinking of making some changes to the official Git glossary (git-scm.com/docs/gitglossary), to make it easier to look up what terms like "object" or "reference" mean in Git

I need some test readers to give feedback on the current glossary: sign up here if you're interested in giving feedback on this page or other Git documentation! forms.gle/LHZSRVWW7RfqmDsQ9

We (over 500 scientists) have put (yet another) open letter to the EU commission online, detailing while we do not believe anything has changed in the recent iteration of proposals that would make it any less unsafe: csa-scientist-open-letter.org/

Please boost. Next week there will be (another) decision!
